Research Focus

In contemporary times, extended education of diverse types and content has become an integral component of modern education, and contribute to the holistic growth of children by offering an array of educational choices and opportunities. On the other side, extended education is also identified as a critical juncture through which children can access social resources, experience educational fairness, and foster a sense of inclusivity.

The primary objective of this study is to integrate various types of extended education institutions and venues into a comparable, unified framework. The aim is to assess their friendliness towards children, families, and schools, and subsequently present a quantitative research perspective.

Innovatively incorporating the concept of accessibility from urban sociology and human geography, this study focuses on a sample of children in specific areas of Beijing. It utilizes a temporal-spatial accessibility perspective to compare, and weight extended education institutions, endeavoring to establish a standardized model for measuring the accessibility of extended education for children.

Anticipated outcomes of this study encompass: (1) a classification of extended education based on accessibility/friendliness, enhancing our understanding of the distinct characteristics of different institutions; (2) an auxiliary decision-making tool for families and schools, assisting parents and educators in making informed choices aligned with the needs of children; and (3) proposed optional indicators for extended education institutions and venues to assess the reachability of their services, facilitating self-assessment and enhancing service quality.
